Valid period
3-day, 5-day passes
You must exchange your Exchange Order for a Hokkaido Rail Pass within 3 months from the date of issue. At that time, you must specify the date that you want to start using the pass. It can be any date within one month from the date the pass is received. Once the pass has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.
(If the passenger is traveling between stations (e.g., on a night train) when the pass expires, the pass is valid for the day following the expiration date.)
However, if you choose to board trains other than that of which you boarded such as Ltd. Exp. trains or reserved seating cars that have an extra charge, you must pay the extra charge.

Flexible 4-day pass
With this pass you may choose 4 days you wish to travel within 10 days from the date your pass is exchanged (including the day the pass is exchanged). If you are on board a night train and the valid period runs out in between stations, only then can you use the rail pass for the day after the valid period ends to the final destination of that train as long as you do not get off along the way. However, if the valid period ends on the fourth day that you chose, you can use your pass past the final valid date. In such a case, if you choose to board trains other than that of which you boarded such as Ltd. Exp. trains or reserved seating cars that have an extra charge, you must pay the extra charge.
